Firefox rules, OK?

If you buy a PC, it comes with the Internet Explorer browser built in. If you buy a Mac, the browser is Safari. But the (also free) Firefox browser, available for both platforms, is rapidly gaining popularity, and may soon overtake IE. For me, it's a no-brainer: Firefox wins hands down on just about every count. It was the first to introduce tabs, so you can have multiple pages at the ready. It puts out new updates very regularly, whereas Microsoft is always lagging months or years behind. But the clincher is the thousands of add-ons available to enhance Firefox. My favourite is DownloadHelper, which lets me download to my computer videos from sites like YouTube.

After hearing all the hype about Firefox I finally downloaded it a couple of months ago.

My friend Glenn's blog makes this big deal about how his blog looks so much better in Firefox and that Explorer wrecks it and friends don't let friends use explorer. Give this, naturally I was keen to see his site properly with my new browser so off I headed. It looked awful, as I have found every site looks awful in Firefox, as the text is jagged which hurts my eyes.

I wondered if perhaps it had other redeeming features and that was what he had been on about but when I opened Glenn's site in both browsers and compared them there was no difference whatsoever except the ugly jagged text in Firefox.

So, while I get it has cool add ons and updates and stuff, visually it wrecks sites and to me that is extremely annoying - am I missing something? Do I have a dud version?

I don't understand why you are having this problem with Firefox, Madeleine. It's not one I have ever come across, as on every computer I have seen, Firefox renders text fine. There must be something else going on here. If anyone can suggest a reason, we would both be grateful

I did wonder. I mean why would everyone rave about something that makes pages look that awful. I should take some screen shots of explorer and firefox and put them side by side so people can see what I mean.

Also if anyone can tell me why I cannot install the latest Quicktime version I would be most appreciative too. I was given an Ipod a year ago, work made a profit so they gave every employee an Ipod, and it still has nothing on it because I need to install ITunes and Itunes won't install without Quicktime being updated and Quicktime refuses to install.

I have the downloaded install pack all ready to go, I run it and right at the end it says Quicktime Failed to Install. ARGH!

Madeleine: try this.

Click Control Panel>Display>Appearance>Effects.

Ensure that the second box is ticked and select Clear Type from the drop down list.
